NCLB puts a renewed emphasis on ensuring that all students in a classroom achieve at high levels. There are proven strategies teachers can use to help all students meet standards and achieve.

Teaching for Achievement

Strategies for Inclusive Teaching: Communicate Respect, Fairness and High Expectations (Center for Instructional Development and Research, 2004)
Specific strategies for ensuring that all students in the classroom feel included and expected to achieve.

Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement (McREL, 2001)
"Describes instructional strategies that are proven effective and can maximize positive outcomes for students" (the book can be purchased from ASCD, $20.95 for members and $24.95 for non-members).

Connected Learning Communities: A Toolkit for Reinventing High School (Jobs for the Future, 2001)
A toolkit to help teachers and their community partners implement community-connected learning to help students achieve at high levels and go on to college (requires registration, free).

Pedagogy Matters: Standards for Effective Teaching Practice (Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence, 1998) PDF | WORD
"This paper synthesizes what is known about effective teaching and learning for all students and expresses that knowledge as five standards for pedagogy, with indicators and examples of their functions in real classrooms."

High Expectations (NCREL, Undated, likely 1996)
Describes how high expectations for all students can have a positive effect on student achievement, and references research that supports this theory.

Provides an overview of the issue, outlines goals, describes action options, discusses possible pitfalls, notes differing points of view, links to case studies and includes contacts for additional information. Features expert voices throughout.

Raising Expectations to Improve Student Learning (NCREL, Jerry D. Bamburg, 1994)
Discussion of the relationship between teacher expectations and student achievement, including why teachers may have low expectations for students, and what can be done about low expectations.

Closing the Achievement Gap

A synthesis of the programs and practices shown to work in improving the academic achievement of minority students.

Including Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students in Standards-based Reform (McREL, 1999)
Report on a roundtable that discussed the difficulty of teaching all students to high standards in a diverse classroom, concluding with "five major areas in which educators can initiate or strengthen actions to improve the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students."
